Charles Pedlar


Charlie is a Sports Physiologist and is a Full Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science in the Faculty of Sport, Health and Applied Science at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, UK.  A Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science, Charlie has combined research with applied practice having spent nearly a decade as a physiologist in the English Institute of Sport working with many Olympic level athletes.  He went on to set up the Centre for Health, Applied Sport and Exercise Science at St Mary’s University. Charlie subsequently spent time in the US on a research sabbatical at the Cardiovascular Performance Programme at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Charlie also serves as Chief Scientific Officer at Orreco, and leads a team of sports scientists and nutritionists supporting elite athletes from several pro leagues including the NBA, NHL, NFL and English Premier League.  Charlie’s broad research interests include biomarkers of fatigue and underperformance (particularly iron status, redox and inflammation), compression as a recovery tool, altitude training, sleep, and the Female Athlete. He has over 85 peer reviewed papers and is an associate editor at the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
